Overview
This article provides the solution to an issue you may encounter when using the Import Export Tool to import a mailbox from Exchange into GFI Archiver, which hangs indefinitely, and always at the same location. You are getting a log excerpt similar to the following:
2018-09-07,16:49:57,335,1,"#000000CC","#00000006","error ","ExchPstExport","Error: Failed to get a response. A possible cause could be an illegal XML character in the subject line. Processing emails of this folder without subject.System.InvalidOperationException: There is an error in XML document (1, 1777). ---> System.Xml.XmlException: '', hexadecimal value 0x01, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 1777
Solution
In GFI Archiver 12.4, this issue is caused by an unreadable character in the subject of the item. This can also be observed by opening the header of the email and see the actual invalid character, but when opening it in Outlook or OWA, that character is not shown.
This was fixed in v14.1 and you should consider upgrading to the latest version to solve the problem.
If it's not possible to upgrade, follow the below steps in your environment:
- Make sure that the Import Export Tool is not opened
- Download and unzip the patch (attached at the bottom of this article).
Note: There are 2 (bit) versions. Use the same bit version as the GFI Archiver installation. Typically this would be the same as the OS bit version. - Backup, rename and replace
...\GFI\Archiver\MarcImportExport\ExchPstExport.EWS.dll
with the downloaded file.

Testing
Start the tool and retry the same export steps that failed previously.
